Response Paper #7

Tonight in class, in a change of schedule, we are viewing the 1940 movie version of The Grapes of Wrath starring Henry Fonda and directed by John Ford.

Your task:  identify one major and specific difference between the movie and the book that takes into account the first 220 pages of the book (to about the time the Joads reach the first Hooverville).  In your first paragraph, briefly define your thesis by identifying difference.  Then in a second paragraph, using textual evidence, define how this element (plot line, character, structural difference, or other elements) is portrayed in the book.  Then discuss how this is portrayed in the film.  Finally, in a third paragraph, thinking about the socio-historical context of the novel--which will become much more evident to you after reading the Introduction in our textbook--discuss why you believe this change was made.  It will be important to look at the history of the time in doing so.

No closing paragraph is needed.
