Readings are due on the dates assigned; in other words, you need to be at the place noted on the date given.  References are given by chapter or book division.  Other editions that are not abridged may be used.

 

Week 1 (April 9)—Class introduction; viewing of Casablanca (1942)

 

Week 2 (April 16)—Willa Cather, My Ántonia, Books I and II, “The Shimerdas” and “The Hired Girls”

 

Week 3 (April 23)—Cather, My Ántonia, balance of novel

 

Week 4 (April 30)—Ernest Hemingway, The Nick Adams Stories, first two sections, “The Northern Woods” and “On His Own”

 

Week 5 (May 7)—Hemingway, The Nick Adams Stories, balance of book

 

Week 6 (May 14)—Film to be determined

 

Week 7 (May 21)—John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath, through chapter 23 (about 300 pages—you will want to start the week before).  We will be viewing the film version of this novel today (change in syllabus)

 

Week 8 (May 28)—Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath, balance of book

 

Week 9 (June 4)—Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath (continued discussion for hour 1); formulaic television--the police show in the Cold War

 

Week 10 (June 11)—Leslie Marmon Silko, Ceremony, we will determine the extent of our reading

 

Week 11 (June 18)—Silko, Ceremony, balance of book
